We are very happy to welcome Eréndira Reindeer (Mex/Fin) dancer, performer, experimental theatre actress and craniosacral therapist and passionate dance teacher, to Camino Art House.
On Saturday (8th February), you can join us for a short introduction to contact dance, and enjoy free movement in our beautiful land. Eréndira will guide you through your doubts and show you the way how you can free yourself, let your emotions drive your body, and express yourself without words.
At the end of the two miniworkshops we invite you to a mediation session in one of our natural caves. These caves are perffectly silent, and perfect little spaces to switch off from reality and bring your focus to your inner peace.
Of course, as always, there will be healthy snacks, good company and inspiring vibes. We finish the afternoon with a magical (controlled) camp fire with live music by Gregory, our sweet guitarist and performer.
If you wish to sleep over, we give you a special price of 10€/person, but you can also catch the bus in the night hours at 9.30pm or 11pm.

We are looking for GARDENERS and HOUSEKEEPERS

Dear Wannabe Helpers!

If you are reading this, you are probably looking for an opportunity to help out while discovering a new part of the world. This can be a nice option for you, because probably we are looking for you because we need your help.

Gardening, landscaping

Camino Art House has a huge land, and before the rain comes we would like to organize the land, clear up spaces, and make it more comfortable for usage. For this project we are looking for 4 hands, 5hours a day, 5days a week. This is a hard job, physical exercise so can be also good if you want to get into shape 🙂 You should be a strong man (not necessarily with 4 hands, 2 might be enough)  because you will need to dig, lift, and carry heavy things. We need 2 strong men for this project, which will be around 5-6 weeks starting anytime from now.

Cleaning, housekeeping

We are also looking for two persons who are able to keep the house and the area around the house (patio, small garden, rooftop) clean, I mean, really clean, like that clean when you “feel comfortable, and you can actually enjoy yourself” clean. We need you if you understand what does keeping clean mean, and you are sensitive for shapes, colours and moods indoor and outdoor. You don’t need to be an interior designer, but we really need someone who is actually able to make a bed nicely, so we could actually make a photo of the room and use it in a travel magazine. If you understand all these, probably you are the one who could help us out.

We offer a shared room as accommodation for you, and food that needs to be prepared by all the helpers. Our helpers also get the opportunity to sleep for free in other hostels on the island, so on your days off, you can have the chance to discover Gran Canaria. We have cats and a little baby dog, so in a small part of your tasks would be also to take care of them besides taking care of the house and the land.

This is a farm-type stay, so please consider that you will need to be outdoor many times, and the house gets dusty and full of spider nets very fast. To keep it clean it really requires a lot of attention.

We are looking for you ASAP, so please, if you like the idea to stay with us for at least 5-6 weeks, help out and enjoy the island at the same time, let us know and we give you more information.

Please contact on bea@caminoart.org, or with WhatsApp message to +34 633339903

Hope to see you soon 🙂

“Spy” for Psychedelic – Daniela Nusitz, aka Kornera about her art making

Kornera - detail

Daniela Isabela Nusitz (aka Kornera), a half Hungarian and half Gran Canarian artist is one of the oldest friends of Camino Art Hostel. She knows our story from the beginning and had been visited events for many years. We were happy to invite her to exhibit her psychedelic art doodles on the “Find love” exhibition in November, 2018.  We asked her about creating art, and about the arty scene of Gran Canaria.

Camino: When did you start to create? What do you create? What is the form of your art?

Daniela: I started to draw fantasy worlds and things that were far from reality already in the early years of elementary school. I like to use many different techniques, colour pencils, ink, black pens, acrylic paint. And often I use many of them at once, combined.

Camino: What is the process of your psychedelic doodling? Do you have an idea before you start? Or it just goes with the flow and the spontaneous imagination?

Daniela: Generally, when I am not doing an ordered job I just let spontaneous thoughts and inspirations find me, which might arrive while travelling on the bus, or sitting on a boring mathematics class so I just start to draw. Or I try to create the forms from an interesting dream. These days I make more art inspired by anatomic or natural shapes and forms, and I add my fantasy world while drawing. Usually, I don’t plan, I just follow my inspiration and the flow of creating.

Camino: How can you fit art making in your daily life?

Daniela: Sometimes it happens that I got so occupied with the daily job that I can’t even touch the brushes for half a year. I wish I had time all the time to make art, I could have so many art pieces! But still, I have a sketchbook with me all the time, so when I have a moment, or I have finished with my daily tasks I can draw any time even at my work, or on the bus. I used to work in a tattoo salon when I had much more time for art, and I could spend more time with graphic design and drawing.

Camino: What do you think about the art scene, art making, arty inspiration on Gran Canaria? What is your experience? How do you see the art scene on the island?

Daniela: I live in the south, a little bit isolated from cultural happenings. Most of the time I have to work. Here in the south, there is not really an audience for art, especially not for psychedelic art. It seems that they are more realistic and are more interested in traditional local art.

Camino: You know Camino Art Hostel for a longer time, how do you feel about this place?

Daniela: I know the hostel from the beginning when it was still located in Hoya de Pineda. There are several programs and cultural events in the hostel time to time, and if I have time, I love to participate, I especially like live concerts and exhibitions. I know Bea and her son Benji for a longer time, so I really like to visit the hostel, and there is always a chance to get to know new people and artists.

What we do

After running Camino Art Hostel for a few years now, we realized that we don’t need to save the whole world. It is enough to make a little change at once, and the best way is education and showing a good example.

Here is what we do to make a better world.

Selective Garbage

We separate plastic, metal, paper and glass garbage. If we pay a good attention on the selection we have very small amount of regular waste left. Starting from 15th January 2019, we have a special program: we are not collecting the trash from the guests. They need to take care of their own garbage and take it away when they check out. The purpose of this program is to raise awareness of the trash situation in general.

We don’t use garbage bags. We prefer to carry the garbage to the large containers in a separate bag that we clean time to time. The bins are also cleaned often.

Compost

We separate raw leftover or not usable food to make our own compost in the garden.

Shopping/NON-shopping

We offer bags/re-usable plastic bags for our guests to do their shopping. We keep these bags to use them again and again. We try not to buy trash: avoid those items in the store that end up in the containers just after you arrive home from shopping.

Recycling

We recycle almost everything we find thrown out by the garbage containers: old furniture, wood, glass bottles, boxes, palettes, etc. We use these materials to make seating or fun areas on the land, or turn them into an art piece.

Natural soap

We use chemical free soap for laundry. Since we use the washing machine a lot, it is important to avoid chemicals and artificial materials.

Cleaning liquid

We use vinegar, sodium bicarbonate and lemon to clean the kitchen and the bathrooms. The lemon usually comes from our own land.

Beach Cleaning

Time to time we organize beach cleaning on the island. It is not only cleaning up, it is also having fun together and playing, swimming and enjoying.

Drinking water

We use the traditional water filter made of lime stone. This is a very practical and natural way of cleaning the water. Please fill up your water bottle from our filtered water deposit. If you don’t have a water bottle please ask for one!

Your little trashy things –aka– meet your wake up call

We really try our best to make you happy. We serve you. We cheer you up. We put you into bed. We clean after you (and before you). We listen to you. We do love you and … we collect your trash.

Days after days we collect your trash, we separate them, we put them in a bag to carry them to the containers. We do all these with our hands.

trash
Plastic trash

Since October 2018 we don’t use garbage bags at Camino Art Hostel. It is just nonsense to buy plastic bags, to throw them out – at least 5 of them daily. Instead, we collect the garbage in little containers and carry them to the selective bin containers in a large shopping bag that we clean afterwards. But wait a minute. What does this whole thing mean? It means that we, the staff of Camino Art Hostel are conscious of the garbage issue. But we kindly invite you too to be part of the conscious trash culture.

Starting from 15th of January we are NOT COLLECTING your trash!

When you check into Camino Art Hostel you will receive a decomposing plastic bag with your name. This will be your personal trash storage. We kindly ask you to collect all your trash in your personal bag and take it with you when you check out.

You won’t find garbage bins at the hostel (except the one in the bathroom for the toilet paper and other small things) neither ashtrays.

No, we don’t do this to upset you. We would just like to raise awareness on the topic. We truly hope you will pay more attention to the trash situation in the hostel, and maybe later in your daily life.

The trash situation is fatal on the planet. We need to make definite steps, and we need radical change. WE MUST STOP PRODUCING TRASH! We need to learn how to exist without SPENDING MONEY ON TRASH! This is the first step. When we have learned this, we can start the cleaning up.

What can you do?

– you can leave your trash in the hostel anyway – we understand that you might get upset because we deprived you of the comfort of collecting your personal garbage. It is ok. We WILL CLEAN AFTER YOU
– you can collect your garbage in the bag provided and put all of it in the general waste container just in front of our building (the green container by the bus stop)
– you can collect your garbage, take it with you, and put them separately into the selective garbage containers on your way to your next location

This project will find people who highly disagree with the idea of collecting personal trash. But we truly hope that there will be more, who will understand the main purpose of the idea and will actually take it as an experiment: how much garbage they produce in a few days.

We will keep collecting the compost which will be a big help for you (just for the record: we produce about 20 litres of compost, about 5 litres of general waste, 20 litres of glasses and papers, and about 40 litres of plastic and metal garbage A DAY in our little 22-bed hostel. when we are more or less 70% full.

We are looking forward to sharing this unique experience with you, and we hope to see you co-operate and use this experiment for your moral growth.

New Exhibition – Travels and lines by Bea and Benjamin Baltavari

Travels and lines is a unique presentation of a family case. When passion for travel, for seeing the world and creative veins come together with excitement for maps in the family, it will bring something quite unique.

This exhibition shows a personal mapping of travels and journies of mother and child. The mapping of places they loved. Where they found joy. Where they got lost. Where they keep finding the excitement of getting know the unknown.

Bea, founder of Camino Art Hostel has been moving around on this wonderful planet for about 15 years. Benji, her son is 13 years old now, and didn’t have a choice but follow his crazy mother wherever she was blown by the wind. They both ended up with a special devotion to traveling, discovering and seeing the world. They have – of course – a bit different point of view, that you can see with your own eyes if you visit the exhibition.

We are happy to invite you to the Travels and lines exhibition opening party on Sunday, 27th January at 6pm.

We will have live music, good food and lovely people around.

The concert starts at 7pm.

If you want to get know the hostel and look around in the magical land please arrive a bit earlier.

Family and pet-friendly program.
We have cats and a lovely dog.
